Parts list and build notes (Rev 2)

All the off-the-shelf parts you'll need to build the Rev 2 version of the field ventilator.

Total price per completed REV2 ventilator unit – at the prices listed for each component below – is around $2,000 USD when components are purchased at retail. You may be able to source them less expensively. Significant cost can be saved by substituting brass for PVC where possible; and by purchasing wholesale.  Also, some of the supplies may be used to construct more than one field vent (e.g. tubing, wire connectors).

Note: Solenoid valves, power supply, valve logic controller and  relays were changed after the Prototype was tested.

Item: 1/2 in. PVC Sch. 40 FIP x FIP Ball Valve
Price (each): $2.80 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 18
Notes: Need six per manifold. With the addition of a Bypass line in REV 2, a ball valve between the solenoids and manifolds is optional. The anticipated 20 million cycle life of the upgraded solenoids should prevent their failure for limited deployments (conservatively up to a few months), so a manual mode of controlling flow to the patient manifolds may not be needed with the REV2 units. This does not mean these valves should not be replaced during routine maintenance. The time of operation should definitely be tracked for each.

Item: 1/2" MIP x Close nipple, brass
Price (each): $4.87 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 18

Notes: You may want to purchase some extra ones. We seemed to run short on these, depending on actual manifold assembly and availability of FPT vs MPT fittings in your area.

Quantity needed: 10

Item: 3/8" Barb x 1/2" MIP Adapter, Brass
Price (each): $3.93 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 4

Notes: You need one on each side of two check valves. One check valve is placed in the Air line prior to teeing into the main supply line (with the Oxygen line on the other leg of the tee). The other check valve is placed in the Oxygen line, also ahead of this tee, but downstream of the O2 Pressure regulator (which reduces pressure from the hospital supply to ~5 psi, equivalent to the pump air supply pressure). Pick up a few extras and also some 3/8" barb x 3/8" MIP brass adapters for the new REV2 Spartan solenoid valves, which has 3/8" FPT porting (not 1/2" like the prototype).

Item: 1/2" Barb x 3/8" MIP Adapter, Brass

Item: 3/4" ID Clear Vinyl Tubing – 1-inch, 10-feet
Price (each): $24.15 at Lowes
Quantity needed: 1

Notes: One roll of this can build multiple field vent units. It is only used as a shroud to protect the 3/8" ID tubing from the pump nozzle, where it goes through the enclosure; and to connect the intake filter (via 3/4" x 1/2" poly adapter) to the pump's 1/2" intake.

Item: Intake Filtration, 3/4″ Poly Insert Male Adpater (3/4" barbed x 3/4" NPT)

Item: Intake Filtration, 3/4" x 1/2" barbed poly adapter
Price (each): $0.99 at Home Depot or other
Quantity needed: 1

Notes: For connecting 3/4" ID vinyl tubing from intake filter to the 1/2" ID vinyl tubing that goes to the pump's intake.

Item: Intake Filtration, 1/2" barbed poly elbow
Price (each): $0.99 at Home Depot or other
Quantity needed: 2

Notes: For connecting the 1/2" ID vinyl tubing that goes to the pump's intake to the 3/4" ID vinyl tubing from the intake filter. There are two required per build because one goes with the backup pump that should be supplied with every unit.

110VAC 60Hz Power

Item: 4 foot, 4 outlet 1200J USB Surge Protector
Price (each): $14.97 at Lowes
Quantity needed: 1

Note: This power supply is not needed for REV2 (which delivers power from the Power Module), but a suitable 110V AC Power Cord with ground and enclosure clamp (e.g. Romex connector) will be needed to bring power to the updated Power Module breaker.

Item: 1/2" Romex connector
Price (each): Approximately $0.99 at any hardware store
Quantity needed: 1

Note: Any suitable cable clamp can be used to attach the 110VAC power supply cable to the enclosure wall. It is recommended for true field units to use an enclosure- mounted female electrical plug receptacle in the cabinet and attache the shortest extension cord possible to it at the deployment site. This avoids having any power cords outside the unit during transport. Also, do not use less than 16 gage wire extension cords capable of 20 amp service.

Item: 110VAC power cord, 3 wire, 20 amp
Price (each): Approximately $40 (Grainger price)
Quantity needed: 1

Item: Extension cord, 8 foot, Indoor/Outdoor, 125V 13 Amp, 1625 Watt
Price (each): $8.95 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 1
Notes: Keep extension cords as short as possible to avoid line voltage drops to power module and pump.

Item: Flanged Inlet, Male electric plug, enclosure mounted
Price (each): approximately $10.00 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 1
Notes: Used in true field units to connect power to the enclosure without having an electrical supply cable dangling outside the box during transport. (Wire this to the power module inside the enclosure).

Rail System

Note: Power Supply was changed from 12V DC to 24V DC after prototype

The prototype power supply rail system will be obsolete from REV2 forward. This does not affect the rail system clamping the air blower (pump) into the housing.

Item: Jam Nut, 1/4"-20 x 4
Price (each): $1.18 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 2 (total of 8 needed to clamp the REV2+ power module in the enclosure)

Note: When installing the power module back plane into the enclosure, place sound damping mat beneath the back plane and elevate the back plane at least 1/2" above the mat to allow cooling air to circulate beneath the back plane. Use jam nuts to do this and clamp the back plane between two jam nuts at each corner.

Item: Round head machine screw, 1/4"-20 x 2-inch length
Price (each): $28 at Home Depot for 50-pack
Quantity needed: 8 per unit (there are enough for 6 field vent units in one pack)
Notes: Use four for power module and 4 for pump.

Item: Mending Plate, 10" Zinc, for retaining Power Supply in enclosure
Price (each): $2.98 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 2

Notes: Use these to clamp the pump to the enclosure. This avoids having to know the bolt pattern of the pump's mounting brackets.

Item: 1/4" Zinc Wing Nut, Bag of 4
Price (each): $1.18 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 2 bags (one for the Power module and one for the pump)

Vibration & Noise Reduction

Quantity needed: 2

Item: Washer, lock INT Tooth, Zinc, 1/4", Bag of 18
Price (each): $1.18 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 1

Notes: These are used to prevent the 1/4"-20 nuts (and wing nuts) that retain the Power Module and Pump from loosening during the vibration of the pump in use.

Item: Mat, sound deadening, phalate free, low VOC emmisions (for sound and vibration damping)
Price (each): $7.98 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 1

Notes: We used the "Jimmy Black 17.5" x 29" mat by Home depot beneath the power module and pump, as well as on the back wall of the enclosure containing the 4" diameter passive cooling air inlets.

Item: Rubber Pin 18"x30" Black Door Mat
Price (each): $10.47 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 1

Notes: We used this material as sound damping on the remaining enclosure walls and inside the lid (cut to appropriate shape)

100% Oxygen Line

Item: Oxygen Pressure Regulation Valve (We used the Olsen model available at Harbor Freight)

Price (each): $70 at Harbor Freight
Quantity needed: 1
Notes: Used to regulate hospital line pressure (50 to 150 psi in general) down to that needed for the field vent unit (approximately 5 psi). Be sure to use Oxygen cleaned pressure regulators and valves in any flow line that will carry oxygen percentages greater than room air! To splice this into the O2 line, remove the CGA fitting and 1/4" NPT nipples from the valve body and instead place 3/8" barbed x 1/4" NPT tubing adapters.

Item: Inline Check Valve (1/2" x 1/2")
Price (each): $11.29 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 2
Notes: Do not use swing check valves. They must remain upright in order to function properly. These inline valves do not. Be sure to use Oxygen cleaned valves in any flow line that will carry oxygen percentages greater than room air! Cracking pressure must be only 1-2 psi maximum.

Item: 3/8" barbed tee
Price (each): Approximately $6.00 for a dozen (various online suppliers)
Quantity needed: 6 per unit
Notes: Can substitute brass for significantly greater cost. You will use two in the Oxygen tubing headers; one in the Air bypass line; one to connect the Oxygen and Air lines to the main manifold supply tubing; and two more to branch tubing from the main supply line to the individual manifolds.

Item: 3/8" barbed elbow
Price (each): Approximately $1.00 from any hardware store (more if brass is used)
Quantity needed: 1
Notes: Used in the Oxygen tubing header.

Item: 3/8" barbed x 1/4" NPT adapter
Price (each): approximately $5.00 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 3
Notes: Used to connect 3/8" ID vinyl braided tubing header supply lines to the 1/4" x 1/4" FPT couplings (and from there to the 1/4" barbed x 1/4" NPT O2 adapters to 4mm ID hospital supply)

Item: 1/4" barbed x 1/4" NPT adapter
Price (each): approximately $5.00 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 5
Notes: Use three to connect 3/8" ID vinyl braided tubing header supply lines to the 1/4" x 1/4" FPT couplings (and from there to the 1/4" barbed x 1/4" NPT O2 adapters to 4mm ID hospital supply). The other two will replace the inlet and outlet fittings supplied with the Olsen Oxygen Pressure Regulator, so that 3/8" ID tubing can be adapted to that regulator.

Item: 1/4" barbed x 1/4" FPT Coupling
Price (each): $4.37 at Home Depot
Quantity needed: 3
Notes: Used to connect 3/8" ID vinyl braided tubing header supply lines to the 1/4" x 1/4" FPT couplings (and from there to the 1/4" barbed x 1/4" NPT O2 adapters to 4mm ID hospital supply)
